Mayan Concept for May, oops December 2012

by David K. on May.11, 2009, under Foretell

There is bunch of stuff out there about the Mayan – architects, astronomers, artisans and time keepers.  What do I mean about time keepers?  Well they calculated the duration of a year when most folks couldn’t even fathom what a year was or that the Earth actually revolved around the Sun.  These calculations were more precise than any Greek or philosopher ever contemplated. They could even predict eclipses, which is fairly advanced as well.

Not only were they scientists, they were sorta mystics/astrologist/future tellers who predicted when their civilization would be overrun by foreigners sailing in from other lands. They predicted world wars and other stuff, Nastrodamus of the Mesoamerica, I guess you could say. So What’s up with the 2012 thing?

The facts are they never really predicted ANYTHING about 2012. Of course if the Spaniards would have left some books we might have more to go on, but they were notoriously anti-book people I guess, burning just about everything.  There were some scripture left, but not that many.  If the book left were the only one that existed it would be one heck of a library check out system and waiting list.

In many ways 2012 basically is an open question. So with no real prediction from the Mayans on why the calendar ends on 12/20/2012 other folks are stepping in to give us there opinions.  So what ideas are out there?

  • New Age: The day the inner cosmos is connected to the divine outer cosmos
  • Cults: Things are going to end, so you might as well join our group and give us your money
  • Doom People: This stuff is going to end and end big, apolcolyptic big.

So in the abscense of writings, folks are just making stuff up, but if you think about some of the core Mayan believes of time, mainly that it is circular if might just mean we start over in a different cycle.  There are several great cycles:

  • First Cycle Ends with a big Jaguar eating everyone
  • The Second ends in Air
  • The Third Cycle in Fire – Think big asteroid?
  • The Fourth in Flood – Ice age retreats and Covers earth with Water?
  • The Fifth in Earthquakes – Where we are arguably now

The earthquake think is speculative, but this is what some scholars think.  What ever you think is your own choice, but this just might not be anything of note, just another day.

Ageism: Old and New Earth Creationist

by David K. on Apr.07, 2009, under Faith

  • Is evolution a religion?
  • Do mutations prove evolution?
  • So just where is this missing link?
  • Just how long was that first day?

The questions about are the type that evolutionist ask and attempt to answer/reconcile with their religious beliefs.   Is the Earth old or Young?   The lines are being clearly drawn on this one, almost as crisp at the line between evolution and creationism in general.

So let’s just baseline that Creation is the belief that God creative earth – end of question.  The open items are just details around the length of time in Genesis.  The young earth creation perspective is the result of a literal interpretation of the description of creation – all of it was done in 6 days. According this biblical approach the the Universe and the Earth is more or 6000 years old.  This is the core component of young age or progressive creationism.

Old World creationist essentially believe in a time gap between verses.  Most folks interpret Genesis 1:1 as the first creation, which included the creation of the heavens, the earth, plants and animals, and even a race of humans. Under this approach, billions of years could have elapsed.

The other major theological delta between young and old-earth folks is the global flood of Noah. The Bible states there was a devastating global flood.  The geological column and sedimentary principles indicate this actually happened over time and so gradually that the animals would have survived anyhow.

What is the Big Bang?

The big bang is a theory on how this whole world and the universe started. The big bang theory is the theory that the universe started from a single point, and has been expanding ever since the initial explosion.

This has been well-established by observations, such as the apparent movement of galaxies away from earth, and the background radiation believed to be the leftover light from the big bang.

The evidence for a big bang having taken place about 15 to 20 billion years ago is fairly overwhelming, so it is reasonable to believe that it is the case.

Some astronomers, who are religious, argue that the big bang theory confirms the existence of God and the basic elements of the creation story as told in the Bible.

Scientists, like people in most any profession, have a vast diversity of religious beliefs. Some of us attend houses of worship, others do not. Some of us consider ourselves very religious, others consider ourselves staunch atheists. So simply while a scientific theory, it could validate God or stories from the Bible
