Religion and Science: Friends or Foes?

by David K. on Jan.26, 2009, under Faith, Science, Thought

So the questions will also where be there of which is right.  Can science complement religion?  Can religion and science be part of everyone’s belief system?  Here is an excerpt from Albert Einstein which posits the symbiotic nature of both discplines:

When one views the matter historically, one is inclined to look upon science and religion as irreconcilable antagonists, and for a very obvious reason. The man who is thoroughly convinced of the universal operation of the law of causation cannot for a moment entertain the idea of a being who interferes in the course of events – provided, of course, that he takes the hypothesis of causality really seriously. He has no use for the religion of fear and equally little for social or moral religion. … Science has therefore been charged with undermining morality, but the charge is unjust. A man’s ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary……The interpretation of religion, as here advanced, implies a dependence of science on the religious attitude, a relation which, in our predominantly materialistic age, is only too easily overlooked. While it is true that scientific results are entirely independent from religious or moral considerations, those individuals to whom we owe the great creative achievements of science were all of them imbued with the truly religious conviction that this universe of ours is something perfect and susceptible to the rational striving for knowledge. If this conviction had not been a strongly emotional one and if those searching for knowledge had not been inspired by Spinoza’s Amor Dei Intellectualis, they wouid hardly have been capable of that untiring devotion which alone enables man to attain his greatest achievements.  -  New York Times Magazine on November 9, 1930 pp 1-4

The challenges of life are something we all want to solve for and both religion and science provide answers – neither of them complete.

Creation, Intelligent Design, Science, Darwinism, String theory and the big bang all have a common thing – faith.  Faith that certain core assumptions are correct.  Faith that both can exist and provide answers.  The only thing which appears to be in opposition in total is what happens when we die.  I think you will find that scientists are split on this and all of them have contributed to the community, their family and have tried to improve the planet.
